Allergy to Peppermint Oil Capsules?

OK, strange thing going on here. My 15 year old daughter started Heather's Peppermint Oil Capsules a few days ago. Today she has a red, itchy rash on her throat and it is spreading down her chest. The only new thing I can think of is the capsules (in fact, we've been cutting out trigger food by the truckload!) Has anyone else experienced an allergy to the capsules (or their contents: peppermint oil, ginger and fennel?) Thanks!

I don't get a rash, but I do experience the opposite of what the Pepermint is supposed to do. I can take one small Pepermint capsule and it completely clears me out, and burns all the way through my intestines. This is one IBS remedy I steer clear of.

have your daughter stop the caps and see what happens. If she recovers and all is clear, have her try again and that will tell you. It's not a common allergy, but it can happen. There are some folks on the boards who are allergic to fennel, so it could be that as well.
Best, Heather

It's certainly possibly. I am *severely* allergic to peppermint. The oil, the plant, the flavoring, all of it. I get migraines if (more like when) people chew mint gum or have a mint and I am in the same room. If my family brushes their teeth toothpaste that has mint in it (not even mint flavored toothpaste--but most have mint in them anyways) my mouth burns and I get really nauseous.
I've only eaten mint once, in a dessert, and I spit the bite back out, but I had to have some emergency benadryl.
I've never had the peppermint oil capsules (I'm not that foolish...lol) so I've never had that reaction in response to them, but I just wanted to let you know that a mint allergy is certainly possible. (Of course, it could be any of the other ingredients...) If she's eat mint candies and gingerbread all her life with no problem, I might suspect the fennel though. Although, allergies can occur quite suddenly. (I'm not sure how that works medically, I find it baffling. But as a life experience, I know that it is true.)
If it does turn out to be a peppermint allergy, be careful, as mint is often disguised in ingredient lists as "natural flavoring". Also beware that Gas-X Gelcaps have peppermint oil in them.
Good luck, I hope she feels better soon.
