Hi everyone! When I was in the Health Food Store last week I noticed among other sweeteners, they are selling Splenda. This product has hit the news quite a bit in the past month. Does anyone know if this is safe to try if you're IBS-C? I'm afraid to eat too much of anything lately because of the severity of the attacks that I've gotten.

I've started taking Papaya Enzymes and Blueberry Acidophilus. Both are chewable. The Acidophilus those has alot of those "ose" ingredients in it and I didn't notice it until after I started taking it. I should have read it at the store but I didn't. The guy helping me was showing me all kinds of products and I only went in to purchase the Papaya Enzyme. I'm hoping the Acidophilus won't complicate things for me. I'm also taking Digestive Advantage-IBS which has Lactobacillus cultures and L Lysine in it. I hope I'm not over doing things. Any input is appreciated? HS

Splenda is still an artificial sweetener and can be an IBS-trigger. I tried it a few weeks ago, hoping to cut some of the sugar in my daily diet, and it made me horribly nauseous, just like all the other artificial sweeteners do.

What "ose" ingredients does the acidophilus contain? *Some* of them are just fillers (like cellulose) that are common in chewables, and may not be a problem at all.

I don't have input on the "overdoing it" thought, because I don't take acidophilus or any other tablets and such for my IBS, but hopefully someone else can answer that one for you!

mom uses it sometimes, but I wont' go near it.. it gives 2 friends of mine who blood sugar issues but not IBS the runs if they eat too much of it!

If it gives healthy people the runs- and I'm predisposed to them I won't touch it!

I have a friend who is perfectly healthy but won't tough the stuff. It makes her and her kids hyper!

I won't touch it either. I don't eat sweets....and that includes splenda!

You may want to try stevia. Make sure though that it doesn't have any added fiber.

Are you trying to lose weight...do you have blood sugar probs? If it isn't about either of these...you can also try brown rice syrup and molasses to sweeten things. Honey is ok if you are C as it is a natural laxative.

Acidophilus is good stuff. Good for you on using it! If it doesn't bother you...I wouldn't worry about it. If it casues problems for you...I would use a different kind in the future.

HFS are great...enjoy taking such good care of yourself *hugs*

Before I was diagnosed with IBS-C I starting drinking that Friuit 2 O water which contains splenda. I could not figure out for the life of me why all of sudden I had D! So out of process of elimination I stopped drinking it and went back to being C! But then I found this site and I am pretty regular now with neither extrmem C or D. So no splenda for me unless I want pain and D!

Wow, I didn't know honey was a natural laxative! I've become addicted to heathers honey chex mix stuff. I eat it every day & would eat the whole batch full if left to myself! I'm a C'er so this is great news.
thanks for the info!

A couple of years ago I was on a "Splenda kick" because I was trying to eliminate sugar as much as possible from my diet. I drink a lot of iced tea (and like mine sweet--Southern style). I had no problems from it, but switched back to sugar when I decided that I didn't want to pay the extra price. (BTW I am not IBS-C, more D)

I've been taking this Acidophilus for about a week now and so far so good. The "ose" ingredients are: Sucrose, Dextrose, Fructose, and Cellulose. The other ingredients are: Natural flavor vegetable stearic acid, blueberry fruit powder, vegetable magnesium stearate, beet juice, and silica. Heidi

The cellulose is a filler like Casey said. Sucrose, Dextrose and Fructose are all short chain carbohydrates (sugars): Sucrose is regular sugar and fructose is fruit sugar. Can't remember where dextrose comes from.

Hey, I'm west coast USA too. Fresno. Where are you? About Stevia, thanks for sharing that with me. I know of only one other person who uses it and she too has Interstitial Cystitis like I do. Supposedly IC and IBS go hand in hand. I'll make sure to check the ingredients in the Stevia before I purchase it. It may be a while as we have so much regular sugar in the house. Since I don't eat much of it, it takes a long time to use up and I hate to throw money away. My husband has a sensitive stomach too and I don't know how he'll react to some of the things that I take so I need to think of how to cook for him as well. For the most part we eat healthy at home. I think I eat much healthier than he does all the way around.

I wasn't trying to lose weight until I started unexpectedly gaining last year. I gained a lot and have been told that it's common when you're Perimenopausal. In fact, I need to finish getting ready to go to the gym so I can get back and get some chores done.

Sometimes it's so hard to stay focused by I have to keep trying and believing that things are going to get better as soon as I find the correct path. I think I'm already headed that way. Take care. Heidi

Also called glucose or corn sugar. A simple sugar, easily fermented by yeast...

Dextrose, commonly called glucose, d-glucose, or blood sugar, occurs naturally in food, and is moderately sweet. It is a monosaccharide (basic unit of carbohydrates) and has a high glycemic index (digested carbohydrates ability to raise blood glucose levels, also called Gl) ranking at 100.

I google!

I work at a health food store and am very disappointed that the one you went to has Splenda !! DON'T USE IT !! It is an a form of an artificial sweetener. There are other natural sweeteners that are all natural that aren't sugar for example Stevia, it comes from an African bush and is safe to use it comes in powder form or some make it in a liquid form. There is also a sweetener call Xylitol that can also kill bad bacteria in the mouth when used in chewing gum but also has other benifits and is all natural. If I can be of further use for you please let me know. Thumper

So I cetainly fall on the D side and I put honey in my tea every day - a natural sweetner yes, but I've certainly never heard of honey as a natural laxative?!?! Anyone else have any thoughts on this? Should I just dump sugar in the tea instead? Honey seemed smoother to me. What do others use?

...I think you would need to eat quite a lot to feel a laxative effect. But if you're concerned, cut it out for a few weeks and see if your symptoms change.

I often drizzle honey on toast and over chicken... for a while I was eating it every day, and never saw any change in my symptoms. I'm an A, but tend more towards the D side. I think you'd have to consume a LOT of honey to see a laxative effect.

Does the powdered form have the same heavy herbal taste as the liquid? I'm using a liquid stevia right now, and it's a dark, syrupy concoction with a heavy herbal taste. In stronger beverages, like chai, I can't taste it at all, but it does leave a funny taste in my Teeccino. Would the powdered stuff be better?

(I went with the liquid, btw, because it's the only one my HFS had that was just plain stevia, without added fiber, which I don't want.)

Thanks!

according to my research on IBS and fructose intolerance. So if you have a problem with fructose this could be your problem with honey.

All of those sweetners: Xylitol, Mannitol, Malitol & the worst Sorbitol are really bad on the tummy for most people.

I stay far away from them and try to read all labels. You would be surprised where you can find them.

I find it hard to believe that honey acts as a laxative - I have a love/hate relationship with it because of the flavour, so there are times I eat a lot and other times I don't touch it for a couple of weeks or more - I have never observed any effect on BMs at all. Honey is a good alternative to sugar because it contains trace minerals, as well as helping to provide some variety. I really think we all need to eat as wide a range of foods as possible and not cut things out unless we know they are hurting us - the list of things we really mustn't eat is long enough already!

I'm surprised now too about them carrying Splenda. I also saw Stevia and know of one of my fellow IC'ers using Stevia. She said it can be bitter tasting though so I've been sticking to regular sugar if and when I use it. I also use very sparingly.

Thanks. Heidi
