Does anyone know if peanut butter is safe for IBS -D? I would love to be able to put it on toast or rice cakes knowing that it is safe. Smuckers makes an all natural variety. Anyone know if it's safe? Thanks!

Hi - it's high fat, and all fats are triggers. Eat it carefully, with a soluble fiber basis (say, have a very thin coating on a thick slice of white bread).

I don't even *want* to know *how* they make it low-fat , but low-fat peanut butter does exist, and I can tolerate it (always with crackers or another soluble fiber). And yes, I would buy the all-natural, just because it doesn't contain partially hydrogenated oils, which are not good for anyone, IBS or not.

I'm typically C not D with lots of P (how do you like that?) but point is I can handle the low fat peanut butter on a soluble base, it's quite a treat! Now, I tried it on raw celery there for a while, what a big no no - yikes!! I also love peanut butter on apple slices but haven't been able to enjoy that for a while, either, maybe one day I'll be able to tolerate that fine again. Good luck!

I used to LOVE peanut butter (the natural chunky kind without hydrogenated oil) and eat lots of peanut butter sandwiches but I found it was a guaranteed way to get an extremely painful attack, even in small amounts. I assumed it was because of the nuts, but if it's just because of the fat maybe I'll try some of that low-fat peanut butter myself... -Mikhaela

I eat peanut butter on a half a bagel every morning after my Metamucil wafers and I tolerate it fine, although sometimes it does seem to bring on the first BM of the day soon after. But they're not D or C - just regular.
