I drank coffee EVERY MORNING for the past couple years. But over the last couple months (since my IBS has kicked in) my tummy starts to hurt literally minutes after I drink it - then I run to the bathroom. I know caffine is a trigger, but it seems like I can't get through the day w/o it, is there any caffine alt, that my tummy will like , and would give me the same "kick" ( other than green or black tea)?

Unfortunately Caffeine is a trigger. And there really is no safe alternative that I know of that will give you the same kick. Herbal teas and water are really the best things to drink with IBS. I used to drink a cappucino every morning and run to the potty right after I got it down. And I would feel crappy for the rest of the day. So, now I go with a cup of Tummy Mint tea in the morning instead and tell myself that the hot liquid alone is enough to wake me up and get me going.
I also have been feeling run down lately and the ladies here tell me lots of water and exercise will increase energy. So this may help for you, I can't say since I am just starting a exercise routine. But it can't hurt either! ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
Also you should check into Heather's diet and a daily fiber supplement and read up on the different types of fiber on this site.
Good Luck, Christie

Yeah, I have to second what Christie says: caffeine is a trigger (and actually, coffee is a trigger for reasons other than just the caffeine), and I can't think of any substitutes that'll give you the same kick. On the bright side, though, once you get that caffeine-withdrawal thing out of the way, and you drink lots of water and herbal teas and are properly hydrated, your energy level will pick up. ![](/messageboards/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif)
By the way, if I could quit caffeine, anyone can. I used to drink an 8-cup pot of coffee a day (4 cups in the morning, 4 cups at night) and nothing but Coke in between. I quit cold turkey back in May, and the first week wasn't pretty, but I obviously survived. Now I drink nothing but water and herbal teas, and honestly, I only ever drag if I haven't had enough sleep or have had an attack. Good luck!

But I knew that caffeine was a problem for me long before I ever found this site... I finally just got so sick from it that I *had* to quit. Things like that get easier when you're too sick to eat or drink anyway, I think.

I didn't quit drinking coffee cold turkey, but I have finally quit (after a long struggle!). I haven't yet gotten over the need for some caffeine in the morning, however I can get by with none - sometimes more happily than others On the mornings I do need a little kick, I will have a glass of iced tea. I know you were looking for suggestions other than green or black tea, but I honestly don't know of any Be careful though, because black tea can cause IBS symptoms in some people due to the tannic acid in it, and I wouldn't drink anything ice cold on an empty stomach.
Hope that helps a little. I was not a big fan of tea at all but I have gradually acquired a taste for it (even green tea - which I used to hate!).

I used to drink a lot of caffeine too and I stopped at once. It bothered my stomach. I don't miss at all, I feel too good!
