Pear Almond Cobbler

The perfect winter sweet treat! If you don't have pears on hand use fresh or frozen blueberries, peeled apples, canned peaches, or any other fruit you love. This recipe is a terrific way to safely incorporate insoluble fiber into your diet - and it's delicious!

1/2 cup flour
1/4 - 1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons Acacia Tummy Fiber
1/2 cup soy or rice milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 cups of peeled, diced pears

Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly spray an 8" x 8" baking pan with oil.

Combine all ingredients except pears in a bowl. Pour batter into baking pan and smooth evenly. Sprinkle pears on top. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until golden, and a toothpick inserted into a cakey part of the center comes out with moist crumbs.

For a soothing dessert or snack, serve the cobbler with a wonderful cup of hot Fennel Tummy Tea!

Are you just learning how to eat for IBS? A little intimidated at the thought of special IBS recipes? Not quite sure just what makes these recipes special in the first place? Don't worry! Come see the IBS Diet pages, and find the answers to all your questions.

divider No Bloating After Just 3 Days!

Hi Heather,

I received the Acacia Tummy Fiber and IBS Audio Program Hypnotherapy CDs on Tuesday. I've been using the Tummy Fiber and have done 3 sessions of the hypnotherapy.

Since I began I haven't had any significant bloating (I usually have it daily)! At the moment it seems too good to be true only 3 days in, but I promise I will update you when I have been using both a while longer.

If you feel anything I have written might be useful to someone else I would be very happy for you to use it on the website or in your newsletter.

Kind regards,
Rochelle G.

Thank you, Rochelle! Please keep me posted! ~ Heather

divider Irritable Bowel Syndrome Can Have Genetic Causes
Irritations of the bowel can have genetic causes, according to new research from the Institute of Human Genetics at Heidelberg University Hospital. The causes of what is known as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), one of the most common disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, are considered unclear – making diagnosis and treatment extremely difficult. Many patients suffer from constipation, others from severe diarrhea, or a combination of both. The illness affects the general condition and quality of life of these patients and often lasts for months or even years.

Serotonin plays an important role in the complex processes in the digestive tract– just as it affects sleep, mood, and blood pressure. Various types of receptors are located in the intestine, to which serotonin attaches ac-cording to the lock and key principle and thus transmits cellular signals.

"We have determined that patients who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea show a higher frequency of certain mutations," explains Dr. Beate Niesler. These mutations appear to cause changes in the composition or number of receptors on the cell surface. Go here for full information about IBS causes, diagnosis, and management.

divider IBS Treatments & Cheat Sheet - Part 2
While I usually use this column to look at one aspect of IBS in detail, this week I thought it would be helpful - especially if you're still struggling - to step back and take a look at the big picture. What exactly are all the best treatment options for IBS? How do you decide which options would be best for you, and what you should try first? Is there an easy way to overview all of this information?

Yep! In a nutshell, there are five key categories of treatment for IBS. The most successful treatments in general tend to be natural. Even though there is no cure for IBS so far, the strategies summarized below can help significantly to alleviate or even prevent all IBS symptoms.

To go with our summary, there is a really helpful IBS Treatment Cheat Sheet for Tummy Care products as well.

Last week, we addressed the first two categories on the list: diet and supplements. This week, we'll tackle number three:

3. Alternative Therapies
Alternative therapies, particularly gut-directed hypnotherapy and acupuncture, are clinically proven methods of relieving IBS symptoms. Hypnotherapy actually offers the potential for a permanent cure, and research to establish this effect is ongoing. Both forms of treatment can (and should) be tailored to specifically address IBS patients, with a focus on reducing the frequency, severity, and duration of attacks. Impressively high success rates are achievable, and side effects should be non-existent.

Gut-directed hypnotherapy has been proven successful at reducing or even eliminating all Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms. Over 15 years of solid scientific research has demonstrated hypnosis to be an effective, safe and inexpensive treatment for IBS alleviation. For Irritable Bowel Syndrome, one of hypnotherapy's greatest benefits is its well-established ability to reduce the effects of stress.

If you're struggling with IBS, the tension, anxiety, and depression that comes from living with an incurable illness can actually undermine your immune system and further compromise your health. Hypnosis can reduce this stress and its resultant negative impact by placing you in a deeply relaxed state, promoting positive thoughts and coping strategies, and clearing your mind of negative attitudes.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome in fact is almost uniquely suited to treatment by hypnosis or self-hypnosis, for several reasons. First, as just noted, stress-related attacks can be significantly reduced. Second, one of the most impressive aspects from hypnotherapy, and of tremendous benefit to IBS sufferers, is its well-documented ability to relieve virtually all types and degrees of pain. Finally, because IBS is not a disease at all but a syndrome, if you can relieve and prevent the symptoms, you have effectively cured yourself of the disorder. The underlying dysfunction may still be present but if you suffer no noticeable effects from it, you will be living an IBS-free life.

Hypnotherapy also offers the unique possibility of a self-directed therapy, as there is the clinically proven option of using a self-hypnosis program specifically for IBS. You can even listen to samples of the IBS Audio Program 100, a terrific at-home IBS hypnotherapy treatment.

Acupuncture is one of the ancient forms of traditional Chinese healing arts. Acupuncture is not a self-directed therapy, whereby a person balances his or her own body's chi (energy or life force). Acupuncture is instead a treatment administered to a patient by a trained practitioner, who balances the body's chi by stimulating areas (acupuncture points) along the primary meridians, or channels, through which chi flows. These meridians run deep within the body and regulate all physical and mental processes, surfacing at the various acupoints.

Acupuncture is the stimulation or sedation of these acupoints in order to balance the body's flow of chi. Acupuncture has become widely available throughout America, with many health insurance plans covering treatment by licensed acupuncturists. Check the First Year IBS book for comprehensive information about IBS treatment through acupuncture.

You can also check the IBS treatment cheat sheet, with Tummy Care products noted for the best symptom matches. Many products help multiple symptoms, so even if a particular symptom is not checked it may well be a secondary benefit of a product.

Coming next time, the remaining key categories of IBS treatments!

~ Heather
