Everybody needs different amounts of Soluble Fiber from a Soluble Fiber Supplement. Usually people who are IBS-C need more than people who are IBS-D. On the other hand, I'm IBS-D and I need 20 grams a day.
If you're concerned about cost, you might want to figure out the cost per gram of Soluble Fiber for your supplement and for others you could try and see which is cheapest. Here's a post where I did that to compare the cost of Acacia and Equalactin. I figured out it costs me about 62 cents per day for 20 grams of SF from Acacia.
You could apply the same math to your Citrucel and see how much it's costing you per gram of SF. You have to compare grams of SF, not just the amount of the SFS you take because different SFS have different amounts of SF per dose.
I agree totally with Linz that you need to take a constant amount of SFS each day. Taking a lot, then a little, then a lot means your body never has a chance to get used to it and suddenly adding a lot of SFS can actually cause more problems than it solves. In addition, one of the ideas of an SFS is to keep a constant amount of "gel" in the gut so things move along smoothly and you don't go into spasms. Taking the same amount of SFS every day, preferably spread out over the day, helps keep things steady.
Remember, also, that you can mix and match your SFS. You just need to focus on getting the same number of grams of SF each day.
If you haven't already, you can take a look at Heather's SFS FAQ page here.
There were also a couple of Heather Newsletters that dealt with constipation. If you missed them, you can read them here.
