Mainly, i like spaghetti. I was wondering, are most sauces IBS Friendly? and for the beef that is normally in it, could i use ground turkey meat, and would it still be similar? (hopefully someone has experimented)

lean ground turkey (turkey store makes ground turkey breast that is 99% fat free...) works well if you really must have meat in the sauce, I find I can handle a lot of cooked vegetables and make all kinds of sauces wiht those, sometimes turkey, sometimes chunks of chicken in it... just watch for your personal triggers...

Ground turkey will work just fine. As for the rest of the sauce, it's hard to tell without seeing the actual recipe!

Is it a tomato sauce with no cheese in it? My experience is that sometimes I can handle tomato sauces and sometimes, I can't. However, I can usually tell if it's a tomato sauce day or not. I am stable now, so it's rarely a problem, but most of last year, tomato sauce was a bad idea. This is just my experience.

Pasta noodles are a great SF food - you need to be sure there's no egg yolk in them, but I haven't found any in store-bought dry pasta. And assuming the sauce doesn't have any triggers, it should be fine, too.

Some red sauces may have cheese and bolognese usually has a little cream in it and may have beef - any of that would be a problem. Alfredo sauces are disastrous - they have cream, cheese, AND egg yolk. But in a restaurant, a marinara sauce should be fine, just make sure there's no cheese or beef in it and be sure to ask that cheese not be added on top. (I always forget to do this and end up picking little shreds of cheese off my spaghetti.) Around here, what restaurants call "tomato sauce" often has some beef in it, while "marinara sauce" doesn't - go figure.

For store-bought sauce, check the labels for the usual suspects: milk, butter, cheese, beef, MSG. You also need to check percent of calories from fat, but remember you're going to be putting it over pasta. So, for example, I really, really like Ragu 7-Herb Tomato jar sauce. The sauce itself gets 33% of its calories from fat. But put the sauce over a serving of pasta noodles and the dish as a whole gets only 14% of calories from fat and is more than safe.

If you want to make your own, there are some spaghetti sauce recipes in the Recipe Index including at least 2 that use ground turkey. I'm quite fond of the one I posted and you can freeze the leftovers.

If you have your own recipe, then substitute ground turkey (I prefer breast or all white meat) for the ground beef and either leave out any dairy or cheese or use IBS-safe substitutes (e.g., soy cheese). I increase the amount of spices, including garlic and onion - the lower fat level from turkey means the flavors don't "pop" the way they do when you use beef. Also, go easy on any oil the recipe calls for - I figure no more than one teaspoon of added oil (I prefer olive) per serving.

Last but not least - if you've got a favorite spaghetti sauce recipe, please do post it.

I have never been able to eat spaghetti without having an attack afterwards. In fact, once, WHILE STILL EATING the spaghetti, an attack came on me, one of the worst I've ever had. And I had made the sauce myself, so it was totally safe, free of pork and beef. (Yeah, I'm a real bore at an Italian restaurant, always having to ask the chef, "Is there pork in your sauce?")

I discovered that the issue -- with me at least -- is the quantity. I don't know how to eat a small serving of spaghetti. Any large meal brings on an attack. I just don't eat spaghetti anymore.

Yes, ground turkey meat is fine for your sauce, and yes, most bottled sauces work fine too; just make sure it doesn't have dead cow in it. Actually, get some sweet ITALIAN turkey sausage (the "sweet" is actually just "mild", as opposed to hot and spicy), remove and discard the casings (they're pork); chop up the sausage and brown it as you would plain ground turkey. The ITALIAN sausage has TONS of flavor and really adds a lot to the sauce.

Also, if you like parmesan on top, be sure to buy SOY parmesan. It's a little hard to find; I have to go across town to the health food store to get it, but it's well worth it.

Don't forget the garlic bread!

I think most sauces are IBS friendly (some have cheese in them, though), because I use different ones all the time and never had any problems. I think you could use turkey as a substitute for the meat sauce, because whenever recipes call for beef, I just use turkey and season it with some spices. Hope this helps!

I use sauces w/o HFCS (I think Del Monte is one) and add soy sausage or ground round. The GimmeLean soy sausage is very good. I use these on pizzas and meatloaf and any other dish that would call for meat.
