Hi Everyone,

I am new to the message boards and fairly new to suffering from IBS. I was told 8 months ago that I had IBS. Thank god because I thought I was going crazy!! Anyways, I find all thinfo on the message boards and on Heather's site soooo helpful and have learned a lot and gotten some great ideas!! I have a quick question, any suggestions on an IBS safe Deli meat I can buy! I've tried like 2 or 3 but no luck. I'm a sandwich lover! Or any sandwich recipes that would be IBS safe!! Thanks Everyone!! =o) Glad to be here!

Personally, I'm okay with turkey breast, but I think you have to watch the additives they put in some of them.

Lately, I have been addicted to either tuna or chicken breast (from the can) mixed with a little LF mayo with a slice of rice cheese on bread, and I toast it in the toaster oven. Kinda like a quickie tuna/chicken melt.

There are also Sandwiches listed on the recipe index. Check this again after Heather sends out the next newsletter, because it will be updated and there will be more listed on there.

Do you have a safeway where you live? that's the grocery store I go to and I eat the pan roasted turkey. it says not MSG added and I've had a lot of luck with it. I always get it shaved so it's especially tasty on a fresh roll. Then you could pretty much add anything that is safe for you...I personally just eat turkey on french bread, but I know I'm strange!

I would just say stick to fresh deli meats (not the prepackaged stufF) and make sure there is no MSG.

I'm sorry you haven't had luck lately...I hope you find something that works for you!

Sounds great. Thanks!! Since I'm fairly new to IBS (8 monts now) I'm still not sure about certain foods, especially from a can because of the preserv. and possible MSG. I'm still in the somewhat "scared stage" I guess =o) So tuna in water from a can is safe for us?? Which brand do you recommend?/ as gfar as cheese, I've had a hard time finding a safe one because some contain "casine" which conatin milk I understand, so I'm afraid to buy it. I hear Casmine is ok for some...but I don't know if it's ok for me..I'm afraid to even try. Any advice?? =o) Thanks for your help. You guys on here are so great and helpful. I LOVE THIS SITE!! =o)

Hi! I haven't been on the boards for awhile and I was just cruising for some new recipes and saw your post about deli meats. I have a food service background and have worked in various delis and kitchens over the years. Your comment on fresh sliced deli meats being better than packaged is a common misconception. The packaged deli meats are prepared and packaged under very strict government regulations with regard to cleanliness, sanitation and freshness. On the other hand, you don't know when someone last cleaned that slicer at the deli, or what they touched just before they started slicing your lunchmeat. You don't even know how OLD that lunchmeat is or how long it's been sitting in the cooler with the plastic wrap hanging off of it. Maybe the reason you are having problems with lunch meat is because of the way it's being handled before you even buy it. Like I said, I've worked in delis most of my life and I only buy prepackaged lunch meat. I know too many clerks who've never washed their hands and I've seen too many pieces of bad lunchmeat served to people when it should have been thrown away. Hope I didn't ruin anyone's day with this.

I think the concern with pre-packaged lunch meat for IBS is that it can come packaged with preservatives and flavor additives, so it's important to read the labels carefully.

You can cook your own turkey breast - it really is super simple - for a Sunday night dinner, then eat it for sandwiches all week. You can also bake a boneless, skinless chicken breast in aluminum foil at 375 for about 45 minutes - add a little white wine or chicken broth and some tarragon plus salt and pepper before wrapping it up. Let cool and slice for sandwiches.

As for what condiment to put on your sandwiches, I tolerate Hellmann's Reduced Fat Mayonnaise (green lid) with no trouble now, but if you're new to the diet, be cautious - I found any mayonnaise at all troublesome when I first started out. There are fat-free mayos and in one of her recipes , Heather suggests jazzing up FF mayo with a little olive oil and a squirt of fresh lemon juice to make it taste better.

There are several recipes in EFI that use chutney instead of mayo on sandwiches - here's an example of one. (Heather makes her own, but you can buy them - just check the ingredients carefully.) Chutney does tend to be spicy, so if that bothers you, you might consider some type of preserves instead - sounds weird, but lots of people eat turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce.

Last, but not least, my husband likes turkey sandwiches with just a little mustard.

I can also eat canned chicken mixed with a little low fat mayo, a little finely chopped celery, and a little onion, as well as tuna - I buy the chunk albacore in water, mix with the same additives as the chicken and add in a little chopped sweet pickle. Again, this might be advanced IBS eating, depending on how sensitive you are to the mayo and IF when you first start out - I didn't try either of these until I'd been on the diet for a few months.

HTH.

What good points! I always hoped that when I asked for my "fresh" deli meat shaved that it had to be okay because it wasn't sitting in the case for god knows how long. I never thought about when the meat cutter was cleaned or the other things you mentioned!
I guess I just don't like packaged meats because they have made me sick so many times before. I just assumed it was because they weren't as "fresh" or something.

You made great points though, and I will definitely rethink buying deli meats again.

thanks,
amber
