I am new here. I have been having IBS problems for a while. I only get D like 1-2 times a week, but it used to be 4-5 times a week. either happening right after dinner, or late in the night. I stopped drinking coke, and noticed a difference right away. the only sweet drinks I have is lemonaide.
I am scared to eat anything most of the time.
this week i have been sick 3 times already as the freezer was stocked up on junk food by my family who left it with me while they went on vacation.
I cannot resist captain crunch cereal. the dye in the crunch berries really trigger my ibs. so i ate a banana first then ate 1 small bowl of it. so far i am fine.
I also drained the milk from the spoon each time i took a bite to keep from eating too much of it. I am trying to find rice milk. not sure where to get it.
Is there any way to keep on a ibs diet without offending my family? I do not cook, I live with my family still and they do the cooking. I try and stay away from meat and stews. and spagetti with sauce as tomatoes hurt my stomach.

Hi! Welcome to the boards! I was first diagnosed with IBS and GERD when I was 13. So I was still living with my family and not doing most of the cooking. But my parents were really good about always having things on hand that I could eat, and my Mom was always really nice about making dinner where there was either separate food for me, or at least a different main dish. This was important because I was a vegetarian too.
Have you talked to your family about it? If they really don't want to make you separate food could you take up some of the cooking?

glad you found us.... but sorry you're sick.
guess what? i'm going to go insane and offer up a suggestion that may be scary or irritating or maybe even a little crazy....
you ready?
i think you need to learn to cook! and guess who your guinea pigs are going to be? your family! aren't they lucky! if you're like many of us, your mom cooks dinner every night. i have a secret for you (and this never occurred to me when i was living in her house before)-- your mom doesn't want to cook everyday. most moms will relish the idea of handing over the reins for a day or two a week.
i suggest you go visit the Recipe boards and get some easy and tasty recipes. if you have any questions at all about cooking or the recipes themselves, post 'em. Kree and her gang are great about helping, and they are good at figuring out substitutions for things (like if your recipe calls for eggs but you can't tolerate the stuff). and believe me, no question is stupid! we've all gone and asked basic cooking questions... no one judges anyone here or makes fun 'cause we're all in the business of getting well!
take these recipes to your mom (or whomever cooks) and whomever shops (if it's someone different). tell them you found a great website that may help your stomach feel better and you'd like to treat everyone to a meal you cooked for them.
if you don't feel like that would be welcomed, during a nice calm time when the chef of the house is not busy and you are in a good mood, go and explain your situation. tell him/her that you think you may have found a solution to your tummy problems, but it involves a change in diet. ask for his/her help. when your family is eating spaghetti with tomato sauce, you can get yours plain and maybe you or the chef can come up with a different sauce for yours (hint: check the Recipe board!). try to come up with substitutions. make large quantities of rice, rice pudding, noodles, whatever and keep them in containers marked with your name. that way A) everyone knows to stay away 'cause it's your "special diet food" and B) you have easy to grab options. do the same with snacks.
i'm currently living with my parents while my mother recovers from a very bad injury and subsequent infection... my father has been "cooking" and won't take my diet into consideration, so i cook 3 times a week and make lots of leftovers. i also make sure to dedicate part of Sunday AM or afternoon to making extras (rice pudding!) and some snacks, just so i have them. it's a lot easier when you're the one stocking the kitchen, but if you're not, like me, you have to suck it up and make other arrangements. i figure, it's my health, i'll be dam*ed if i let someone else make me sick! sometimes we just have to forge ahead and make our own path... it's easy for me 'cause i pay for my own food and love to cook, but as i've said to others on the board: we all have to learn to cook sometime! (PS: my mom likes my cooking better-- my dad makes hamburger helper, etc.. and i :"make recipes" according to her!) (Another PS: the favorite dessert in my family right now - including visiting family - is pumpkind cheesecake. it's easy to make and no one would guess it has tofu in it! seriously.)
NOTES: - you do not need to tell them the recipes may have tofu etc, if your family is skittish about that kind of thing. that is, you don't have to tell them 'til until after they rave about how good it is. it's fun to tell them "and that's not meat!" and watch their little faces!
- make enough of the meals you cook so that you have plenty to snack off of for the week. that way you can have leftovers if your family is eating something you can't.
- there's a sticky post (it looks like it has a red pushpin holding it in) at the top of the Recipe Boards that links to the recipe index. that's a great place to start.
- if you're really craving something, you can make the Recipe gang go a little nuts if you post something like "i have 4 chicken breasts, a lime, spaghetti noodles and and avocado. what can i make?" they stumble around excitedly trying to find something cool and safe to do with that! it's fun to watch! (and you get a great recipe out of it)
as for the rice milk issue: rice milk is good and can be found at health food stores... i prefer soy milk (by Silk, actually), especially the Vanilla & the Very Vanilla (it says good for kids--- guess i'm a kid at heart! ). that's also at the HFS, but the grocery stores near me all have it... it's in the same refrigerated cases as regular milk. it comes in biggish cardboard boxes. YUMMM....
