You know I rarely eat banana's even though they seem to be a soluble fiber safe food.
Whenever I do eat them...I get a bloated/tingling feeling...and I never understood why since this is a natural fruit NOT some HCFS jellied canned fruit.

Hey linisue-
I searched for "bananas" within the Eating for IBS Diet Board, and Syl posted on Aug 1 2009 about high fructose corn syrup and how some folks with IBS don't absorb it very well, making them sensitive to some fruit. If you click on the link to the newsletter and look up the article, you'll find a whole list of fruits that are higher in fructose than glucose.
I'm not sure how relevant that is to bananas since I didn't see them in the list. And I'm not sure how relevant fructose malabsorption is to me, since right now I can't eat any fruit at all lest I get sick for days. I can't even eat banana bread!
I'm actually getting tested today for food allergies to rule that out as the cause. It sounds like others have problems with bananas too, so at least I'm not alone there!

But why would pure bananas give us a problem? I can see if they were canned in a syrup they may cause problems, but a fresh banana?
It's soluable fiber.

When I eat bananas, they have to be pretty green. Otherwise, I tend to get heartburn almost immediately from them.

Still don't understand why bananas cause trouble.

I seem to feel bloated/gassy no matter what I eat. I can't even find a safe staple-- even the soluble fiber foods make me feel that way. I thought I could at least trust bananas but maybe they are the culprit too. How do figure out what works and what doesn't when everything seems to do the same thing? Sometimes I feel better eating trigger foods than I do eating soluble fiber foods.

I've been on a strict EFI diet for the last week, with similar symptoms to what you're experiencing (constipation, gas, bloating). I'm starting to discover certain triggers for myself as my gut stabilizes. I now realize that garlic and pears make me feel worse, but peas do not (as long as they are eaten after lots of SF). I don't think you will find any overnight fixes to the gas and bloating. I'm starting to see an improvement as I follow the diet, and use the tummy fiber in a low dose as directed. I've also discovered this week that moving around is key to helping with gas. After eating a peeled pear (after my high SF lunch) and ending up almost doubled over with gas, I made a decision to find activities that required standing and moving around for a while. I even went for a walk with my dog. It helped tremendously. Yoga stretches can help move gas through as well. Try ones recommended by Heather as a starting point. The fennel tea really helps with gas too.
Above all, I'm starting to learn it is about patience. Stick to the EFI diet (and avoid anything else you know you should) and don't expect it to help you feel completely better right away. It's slow. I will tell you that compared to how I was feeling last Saturday, I've made noticeable progress. Good luck!

Thanks-- I think a big problem of mine is that my symptoms seem to be the worst right after lunch and I can't get up and walk around (I've definitely noticed that movement is good too) because I am at work at that time and I am sitting at a desk all day.
Sometimes-- when I exercise I feel so nauseous that I have to stop. Does anyone else have trouble even trying to do moderate exercise. I used to run marathons! Now I'm lucky if I can get through 30 minutes at the gym without feeling bloated and like I'm going to vomit!
Thanks for your help. I really need to work on my patience with this...

Yes Penney! I know what you mean. 30 minutes of moderate exercise for me on the treadmill is so hard! I have to break up the minutes like 10 minutes here, then 10 minutes later etc. The times will very depending on how bad my symtoms are that day. I can't do 30min in a row or else I come thisclose to vomiting . I really struggle with gas/bloating/constipation too. I have bloating and gas 24 /7 . It has really made my stomache look like I am with child. I have noticed that the symtoms are a little better recently since I have been taking a probiotic for almost 2 months ( bio k dairy free) and I have decreased my fructose intake too.
