New - looking for some ideas

Hi there, I've been reading this site and board for a while and tried some of the things - now it's time to ask some questions!!

My main problems sem to arise after having a BM. I only have one a day and they seem to be pretty normal. After I have finished my gut seems to be extremely overactive and I can visibly see it twitching and 'pulsing' away. This seems to create a build up of gas which takes a while to disipate. I also seem to get slight lower abdominal cramps after eating lunch and dinner - it gives me a feeling of trapped wind and a feeling that going to the toilet would make it better although I know that I don't actually need to.

Am taking colpermin, plenty of herbal teas, am trying to follow the diet and am taking a small amount of acacia.

Things seem to be getting worse not better and I don't know what to do. It is really ruining my life and making me very tearful and low (which is pretty embarassing for a 23 yr old male!!) I just want my life back

thanks x

I see you're drinking some herbal teas. Have you tried Heather's Peppermint or Fennel teas? They are much better than the store bought kind.
Do you exercise? That is very important and it helps your body.

What is colpermin?

Colpermin is basically peppermint capsules with a special coating so they dont release their contents too soon. I drink lots of fennel and peppermint but not heather's because being from the UK it is not cheap.

Hi jonny i`m from the uk, where abouts are you from?

Are you ibs d(ioreoh) or c(onstipation) or a(lternative)? How long have you had Ibs? Do you follow heathers diet? these are all factors you should consider.

As for buying stuff on this site. I`m a student and recently bought the acacia fibre and it wasn`t that expensive as the pound is quite strong at the mo. have a look and a read about it in the section called ibs supplements. Have you improved at all since you posted?

Another tip is hot baths, eat small amounts regulary, exercise (all of which I never do although I should )

Pleas do`t get down about it and don`t be embarresed to talk to your friends/family about it - people are generally understanding. Take one day at a time and take small steps to make it better. Just keep smiling and do not let ibs beat you. if you want to email at all at anytime my email is in my profile, just ask away or just email me for a chat.Getting hings off your chest and having people to share it with really helps.

The support on this site is invaluable. Good luck, hope things improve.

Ta for the support, I'm from Leeds so only just across the Pennines! I have bought the acacia from here and it wasn't that expensive and arrived pretty quickly as well. I can't really justify buying the tea's on here, even if they are supposed to be more effective.

Am neither C, D or A which is all very bizare! Which is why I wonder whether I actually have IBS! Was 'diagnosed' about 4 months ago but was not really that impressed with my GP.

Problem is that I don't believe that I am going to get any better and I always worry about it. Now I know that this isn't going to help but it's so hard to change my mindset!

Hi Jonny

Jo's doing a good job of looking after you on behalf of us Brits, but just thought I'd poke my head into the thread to say hi! I'm from Sheffield, so just half an hour down the road. (Although I'm now living with my boyfriend half way between Nottingham and Derby, I'm a Yorkshire lass born 'n' bred!). There's also Nat, who's from Liverpool but studying in Leeds right now, so right on your doorstep!

Your symptoms sound a little confusing, but I'm no expert - and I would guess following the IBS Diet principles will still help you out, whatever it is.

Hope you're feeling a bit better! Caroline

awww i know exactly how you feel. I was diagnoised two years ago nearly but have since had blood tests, colonoscopy and am going to have an endoscopy in a few weeks so make sure you get properly checked for EVERYTHING. You should buy first year ibs - get it off amazon.co.uk. It is really helpfull.

There are a few of us on here from england that are a similar age. Natalie1985, she`s 21, lives in merseyside yet is at uni in leeds. She`s great and has been a great support to me. Blondie13lives in shefield and joined around the same time as me. She too has been a great help. Its just nice to talk to people about your tummy problems that have had/have them too.

The doctors have given me mebeverine (helps with spasms, sometimes called colfac) and leperomide tablets (helps with diareoh).

you should try eating soluable fibres before anything else. You might have seen some of these pages before but have a read and try out what they say:
what to eat
10 commandments
cheat sheet

and just try and think positive, i`m a worrier too but if you worry it is not going to get better, you have to work hard so you don`t get beaten by it.

Give these things a fair try and if you still don`t think it is ibs after trying some of these things MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR DOCTOR TO CHECK OTHER THINGS

hope that helps

anyway feel free to email me anytime

What type of testing did your doc do to diagnose you with IBS? It seems strange that your BMs are so normal. Usually people with IBS either have D, C, or A. If you think that it might be something else and you didn't like your doc, I'd go see another one about this and get a firm diagnosis from someone you are comfortable with. You definately want to be sure you have IBS or this diet may not work for you at all.

I have just upped my dose of acacia and it has made me C! Not good! Is this particularly abnormal or what?! As I said before, I'm not usually C, D or A!
