Hi, I do have Eating for IBS ordered, but I am wondering is there a more complete list or table of which fruits and vegetables are soluble fiber and which insoluble? There are a lot more things out there than the basic "break the cycle" list of foods and that is the same list I find everwhere on the net. I tried searching on the message boards but haven't found one.
Fairly newly diagnosed (thought it was an ovarian cyst but on none discovered, received an abdominal ct scan order by my gyn that came back clean. Listening to me, he felt it was IBS and reading about it, I have to agree), but I can see now back in time that there were probalby milder attacks going back to my 20s, mostly what I called "raunchy gut" feeling, but also occassional pain. This year however, seems to be "everything at once". Clearly I am not as bad off as most people for which I am profoundly thankful. I also find that mine is very stress triggered (even when I think I am handling stress fine) and if stress hits during my cycle bad news. I see it way more as a trigger than foods. Other than high fat and artificial things (I have always known I was touchy to artificial sweetners and overly processed foods) between attacks I seem to not be terribly limited. However, quite obviously as I get older my body is saying Whoa Nelly. So, I am trying to adjust. I definitely see eating soluble first as a big help. But to help me figure out things, I need more comprehensive lists than I am finding and while you can easily find "fiber" listings, finding which is which is not so easy. Any help appreciated. Sorry if there is one here somewhere and my searches just didn't work. I'd appreciate a pointer in that case.
IBS-C (C seems to be a bit harder to figure things out, I've decided).

Welcome! There's a Cheat Sheeet on the main Helpforibs.com page. There's also a list under the IBS Diet & Recipes link. Anyway, I'm not sure if you've seen the Cheat Sheet yet, but here's a link:

The list of Soluble Fiber Foods that you get to from the Break The Cycle page (web page) is the entire list of soluble fiber foods that should form the base for any meal or snack. There are other foods that tend to be high in soluble fiber while being low in insoluble fiber (for example, peeled peaches tend toward the SF end), but the foods on the Soluble Fiber Foods list are what are meant when the EFI Diet talks about Soluble Fiber.
This doesn't mean these foods are all you can - or should - eat. Except for the trigger foods and irritants, you can eat anything, provided you do so carefully: after SF and chopped, cooked, pureed as needed to ease digestion.
Also, you need to be sure you've been accurately diagnosed, especially if your symptoms have worsened. You can take a look at this page to see what tests should be done and what conditions must be excluded before an IBS diagnosis can be made.
HTH. Welcome to the Boards.

You definately need a solid diagnosis for IBS. Make sure all other conditions are ruled out.

Well, two internal ultrasounds ruled out a cyst and the clean cat scan seemed to indicate nothing else was amiss, but I definitely have constipation, gas, pain and apparently nothing shows up to cause this. I'm not really sure that another doctor would find anything else. Are there some other tests I should have?

Hey Chuple,
Sounds like you have a good start on the tests, but really, to be completely sure there's not an underlying problem/disease that has similar symptoms, you should go through all of the tests.
List of tests is somewhere on this site & also in the IBS: First Year book. But...in short, I've had a) blood tests - including that for ovarian cancer, celiac disease, b) upper endoscopy (which also looks at the top part of the intestines, c) colonoscopy, d) small bowel followthrough, e) stool sample test (for parasite), f) abdominal/pelvic CT scan, g) abdominal ultrasound. So...you have more tests to go if you're really looking to have a solid diagnosis. It would be terrible if someone cureable was overlooked, ya know? Or something more serious...
The tests are not always "pleasant", but I take great comfort in knowing nothing else is wrong with me! Your symptoms are so common among different diseases.
Hang in there. Testing's a pain, but worth it in the end. Then you can move forward with the IBS diet, etc. with confidence that you're going to make headway on the IBS. =)

Wow. Had no idea. Jeez. I can barely pay for the CT scan and ultrasounds I just had, even though I have insurance. Well, I supose I'll call the doctor again (GYN) and see if he can recommend me to a gastrointernologist. Thanks. I'll look for the list of tests.

Thanks, I found them. Very daunting. I thought the ultrasound and CT scan would be enough. I made an appt. with my gyn who did all of this so far, since I'm sure he'll have to recommend me to someone else. Can't get into him until June 22. This sucks. I'm also now all panicky. I thought that with really hitting those Rome Criteria and not having any of the red flag criteria, it was fairly certain.
I will say it seems less food triggered and more hormonal and stress triggered (or worsened anyway). Though beef can cause immediate pain, but not always. Milk doesn't seem like a problem. Fried things, yeah, give me "raunchy gut" very often. Artificial things make me feel "icky" which I've known since they first came out and I tried them. Splenda didn't seem bad and I rarely use it. But since I rarely use it, might as well use sugar anyway.
I will say, I've always eaten *fairly* healthily, but I eat way more insoluble fiber than soluble. I've noticed, after reading this stuff, if I have soluble first, seems to be fine to have other things. Also, large amounts of food are just a big no no. I usually do pretty good at that, but if I over indulge, ugh. At any rate, I guess it is back to the drawing board which is most depressing and worrying that they missed something and I should have been getting tests these last two months and panicking again all over that I have cancer.
