Newbie with a few questions

First I want to say hello and I'm so glad to have found this place.
I have been lucky in comparison to what I have been reading here. I suffered with IBS-D on a pretty infrequent occurance. But lately it has been much more often and the past month has been cronic. Just by following the advice on the website I have completely eliminated the pain and cramping for the past 3 days. That's such a relief to me.
I ordered the starter kit with both books and the Acacia. I also ordered the Peppermint caps.
One of my questions though I am sure it will be answered when the books get here, but for now I'm still not sure what to eat. One of the things I have been doing is taking a can of Chicken noodle soup and adding a bunch of cooked white rice to it.
I am wondering what condiments are safe. For instance, Ketchup, spaghetti sauce, garlic salt... Eating for breaking the cycle seems to be working, but is incredibly bland and I'm hoping to add some flavor to the noodles, potatos ...etc.
Thanks in advance.

I know the feeling of waiting for my books to arrive and having a thousand questions. It's hard for me to give you many specifics but lots of the info that is in the books is also printed here in the opening webpage. I even printed the "cheat sheet" that is listed in Heather's pages or do a search on this board for "cheat sheet"...getting creative with spices is still my challenge. Try the recipes index on the boards you will find tons of great recipes. Not sure I am specific enough for you but don't want to give you any wrong info since I'm still relatively new around here too. Good luck and enjoy feeling better everyday! Oh and don't get discouraged the boards are really slow around here on the weekends...

Hi and welcome Bernie!

Like Franny said, there's so much info on the diet and such on this site that it would be difficult if not impossible to summarize it all in one post. Heather gives a good list of pages on the diet to read at the top of the eating for IBS message board (here), and when you get your book it should be more clear. In the meantime though, definitely read through all those links.

Also, the breaking the cycle diet should be JUST SF foods - so NO condiments. Bland I know but your gut needs the break. BUT keep in mind that's JUST for a few days - after that, you can (and should) start expanding your diet a lot. Just keep out the trigger foods, keep low fat, lots of SF, careful with IF (never on an empty stomach, always after SF) etc.

Hope that helps

garlic is a major trigger of ibs symptoms. i was always wondering why i felt lousy after eating certain meals and i found out that it was garlic. i can handle a small amount as long as its cooked, but the raw garlic is killer. as for other condiments, i'd say use organic ketchup instead of the common brand names which contain high fructose corn syrup. also ketchup, mustard, and mayo all contain vinegar which is problematic for some but not me. hope this helps

Welcome to the Boards. I'm glad you're feeling better.

As Retrograde said, no condiments on the BTC diet - it's to give your gut a rest with only soothing SF foods. Once you get past that, you can use a range of condiments and flavorings. Here's an old thread about seasonings that wanders over into condiments. HTH.

Hi and welcome!
Just thought I'd warn you to check your soup ingredients for MSG. It's an evil gi irritant and shows up in lots of places. I know normal Campbell's soup usually has it. Some of the "Healthy" recipes are better about not.

But the rice in the soup idea is a very good one!
