Really dumb question about bakeware...

I feel silly even posting this, but as much as I know about cooking, I'm a complete dummy when it comes to cookware and bakeware.

I have some aluminum baking pans that are discoloring - heavily marked with dark gray, almost black, splotches. They weren't the result of anything being burned on the pan. I'm assuming this is relatively common, but what causes it? It's not harmful to keep using the pans for baking, is it?
