This is a recipe that's been in my family for a while (I also recentely saw it in a cookbook), known to "boost a slugglish digestive system" - and it's pretty yummy breakfast.

2 ounces barley
4 cups water (or a mixture of water and soy milk, however you like it)
Raisins, dried black currents, dried blueberries (or other dried fruit)
pinch of ground nutmeg
2 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 cup white wine or a little brandy (OK because it will get cooked)

Boil the barley in the water/milk along with the raisins and other dried fruits and nutmeg until the barley is tender. Take it off the heat and stir in the sugar and wine, then return to the stove and bring it to a boil again. Once it's boiling, turn down the heat to low and let it cook for about 2 minutes. (It should look kind of like rice pudding when you're done).
Enjoy!
