Shirl, never feel silly asking any question that bothers you. We've heard it all here -- and have asked our own share of "sillies." That's the only way we can learn -- 'cause our GIs certainly aren't gonna help us! -- okay, I better not go there .... 
Salads by themselves are a no-no, as Kree says. I used to love one-meal salads. Hubby and I used to love to go to Izzie's (a marvelous salad bar) and I'd get fresh broccoli and peas on mine with a marvelous honey dijon dressing -- oooh, I can taste it now!
I'd leave the restaurant, get in the car, drive onto the main drive, on my way home -- and it would hit. BAM! Oooh, I had a hard time getting home in time. Cramps and diarrhea like you would not believe!
It's not worth it.
I tried having bread beforehand, but it didn't help. I haven't returned to Izzie's; I just don't dare.
