backpacking food list

Backpacking requires foods that don't need refrigeration but are also lightweight. Here is a list of foods to choose from.

Packable foods:
• Lemon, lime, orange
• Cucumber
• Carrot and baby carrots are a good snack
• Apple
• Pepper
• Onion/shallot (shallot is excellent to bring with)
• Zucchini
• Potato, etc (but heavy)
• Dried fruit, fruit leathers
• Nuts
• Pasta (angel hair best)
• Rice
• Couscous and the like
• Pita
• Tortilla
• Crusty rolls
• Salmon pouch
• Tuna pouch
• Chicken pouch
• Crab pouch
• Jerky
• (Salami and the like)
• Chocolate
• Oatmeal etc
• Pudding mix, baking mix like Bisquik
• Fruit cups, jello, etc
• Crackers, pretzels, bars, etc
• Cereal
• Marshmallows
• (Some cheeses for non IBSers, Baby Bel holds up well and parmesan too)
• Oils, vinegars and spices (don't forget sugar), soy sauce packets, ketchup packets
• Garlic cloves
• Peanut butter
• Herbs that will dry such as rosemary, sage, thyme, mint
• Tofu such as mori nu
• Soy or rice milk ind. size
• Dried mushrooms
• Dried tomatoes
• Other home dried things
• Baked things



An option for the first night is to bring frozen cooked meat such as chicken breast. This will thaw through the day but will still be safe to eat the first night (per Backpacker magazine).
Also Hub is bringing these little boxes of wine they sell for camping.
