I was diagnosed with IBS back in June of last year, after suffering through severe abdominal pains, and ending up in the ER a number of times, with those exact pains. I was prescribed nortriptyline, and it was suggested I try changing my diet etc. First of all people like me, in their 70's, normally don't get diagnosed with IBS that late in life. So, I asked myself a simple question. When did this all start? Answer: After my gallbladder removal. With your gallbladder removed, the liver is dropping bile into your small intestine 24/7/365. I was vomiting, pains, etc. On my 6th visit to the ER, the doctor on duty, I think had a feeling of what was going on. He gave me some medication called Sucralfate. Within 30 minutes, pain gone, feeling normal. His diagnosis was Bile Reflux not IBS. Same symptoms. There is a support group (forum) for folks with exactly what I was going through. So, I took a poll. How many of the members were diagnosed with IBS after gallbladder removal. 63%. I also contacted the surgeon who removed the gallbladder, and asked him if he had ever heard of this, and no one had ever brought it up. We spent 40 minutes on the phone, and I explained to him that when folks begin to have abdominal issues, they don't send them back to the surgeon. They end up with GI doctors. Lastly, on another IBS Forum I asked the same question. 23%. Sorry about the lengthy post, but I am really curious how many members here MAY have been mis-diagnosed. Thank you.
