Ahh, I hear ya Steph, those desk jobs are hard on the waistline, aren't they? I went from a desk job to sitting in class all day, boy, that was even worse! And, especially since I am SUCH an emotional eater, guess what happened when I was stressing over an exam? Well, the good news for me is my new job post-school is on my feet, so that helps.
But, on the subject of metabolism, yes, going to the gym is important, as well as when you eat. I like what Christine said about eating every couple hours, that really does help keep your metabolism revving. Also, do you eat breakfast? It honestly is the most important meal of the day, 'cause if you don't, your body actually stays in "starvation" mode after not eating all nite, and when you have lunch, it wants to hang on to EVERY calorie you eat, and you'll probably eat more at that point since you'll be quite hungry, so it defeats the "purpose" of skipping breakfast.
Also, when you go to the gym, do you just do cardio or weight training as well? One of the most important things we girls can do for our long-term metabolism up-keep is build muscle. Really. I'm not talking big, muscled-up looking (unless that's what you want!), but building some muscle raises your resting metabolism which enables you to burn more calories even in your sleep. That's the key to long term weight loss. Ok, of course, portion control has to go along with that (there's my problem!), but all of these elements work together.
I hope you won't be too hard on yourself, I know we all tend to be at times. An extra 15 lbs does not make you a bad or unloveable person! Remember to be kind to and love yourself, and you may find it easier to get over this hump and get your weight back to where you would like it to be.
Remember, we're all in this together!
