A couple of thoughts, can you go in on a gift with a co-worker or two? You can get a decent gift without spending a lot. Money you spend actually depends, I think, on how much you know this mom and how much you want to spend. You don't want to go broke.
You can never go wrong with onsies, variety of sizes and I wouldn't get the newborn ones because they grow out of them so fast, hooded towels and wash clothes are my favorite. Bibs spoons, bowls, and bottles are great (playtex nursers were my favorite but I have also heard some people like what are the Dr. Brown's)or even sippy cups. Toys are nice but don't get any stuffed toys because everyone seems to get those, unless you can't resist. Is she registered? I would go with a theme if you can, such as bathing, diapering or feeding and that helps if your friend is registered.
BTW, Toys r Us is having a baby sale right now until Aug 1st. You should be able to get the ad when you walk in the doors. I went and bought a swing for a friend today. We have a total of five girls piching in $15 and I was able to get that some bibs and a toy for the car seat. The swing also needed batteries so I picked that up. The sale was so great at Toy R Us I think everyone only owes me $13. I bought her the Fisher Price Link a Doos take along swing and it was a little less than $50 with 10% off! I might buy something else or give her the outfit I picked up for her earlier this week and get her something later when she has her baby. We spent $15 each on the other two friends that had babies in May.
