Well, you know to check those things out this time around, so I won't say obvious things like checking the water, leaks, doors that close properly, etc. Heh.
My big thing now is, unless you already know the neighborhood really well, REALLY check out the area - if you have the time, come back at night and see what it's really like when everyone's not out at work. If you drove by our apartment, you'd think it was a perfect little neighborhood... till you came back at 3am and heard the drunk upstairs neighbors throwing furniture at each other, or their friends burning rubber up and down the street in their souped-up cars. (This is our mistake that we'll never make again, heh.)
Also, if you do look at a place and it needs some minor work before you move in, get it in writing. We've lived here for 10 months, and still don't have a bedroom door. (And we waited 3 months for drawers for the kitchen... one of many things that were supposed to be done before we moved in.)
