Going apartment hunting today, looking for tips

Hey Guys,
Well, I'm going out apartment hunting today to look at some new properties as my boyfriend and I have finally decided to move out of the crap hole that we're currently in  I'm looking for anyone's tips or suggestions for things to look for when looking at properties.
The apartment I'm in now is the first place I've ever had on my own, and we really rushed into renting it and didn't properly check it out and got kinda screwed in a lot of ways. There are huge water problems, mold in the bathroom, sliding glass doors that don't shut properly, etc etc because when we looked at it, all we really did was peak at how big the rooms were and the layout and say "ok!" (I know, not too smart).
So, any tips for a newbie at this kind of thing? I want this place to be somewhere where we can live happily for awhile, and so I want to minimize any "surprises" down the road.
