Hi Winnie,
I have diverticulosis also. I've had two diverticulitis attacks so far, so I know what you're going through! They're not fun.
The antibiotics will take care of the problem. What kind are you taking? I was on Flagyl. Worked great. However, you need to stay clear of all seeds from now on. That means even tomato seeds. Eeek.
I am also IBS-D. However, I don't know anything about Dicetel or Effexor.
Do you have Heather's book, "The First Year"? You need to get it and follow it to the letter. We all do here in the Boards. I got a LOT better after I did. You're not drinking coffee, are you? Not even decaf. There's an enzyme in coffee that's a HUGE trigger for IBS. Ditto with all dairy.
Can you tolerate soy? (Some people can't.) Soy constitutes the majority of my diet: soy milk, soy cheese, soy sausage, soy butter, and even soy COFFEE! That's right -- Soyfee! It's fabulous! (I get it online: The Best Coffee In The World
Are you taking a soluble fiber supplement? What kind? How much? Yes, even for us IBS-D-ers, we need the SFS. I used to take Heather's Acacia (which most of us take), but now I take Benefiber. A lot of us take Citrucel powder.
I also take Calcium +D (1,200mg./day).
You can also consider a probiotic. I take Jarro-Dophilus EPS, 2 a day on an empty stomach. Makes for good gut flora.
These Boards are incredible. Not only do you get the best support, but these people are incredibly knowledgeable and VERRRY helpful. I got SOOO much better, thanks to the Boards!
Truly, if you get Heather's book and follow it, you'll get better, I guarantee it. You need to know important tricks, like making sure to have a soluble fiber first, before you eat anything, especially fruit and veggies; and making sure to chop up those fruits and veggies real fine before cooking with them (which is the best way to prepare them for your tummy to digest). Fruit smoothies are fabulous, and veggie soup is the only way to go -- but be sure to have that sourdough bread beforehand!
Check out the links to your left for Heather's books, especially "The First Year," and her incredible tummy teas and peppermint capsules (antispasmodic).
Again, welcome to the Boards! Feel free to ask anything at all -- we're here to help.
Bev
P.S.: You might want to post any IBS issue in the IBS Diet Board, any recipe issue in the Recipe Board, and any question about the hypnotherapy program (which is FABULOUS) in the Hypno Board. The Living Room here is where we play and chit-chat about silly stuff.
Again, welcome -- it's good to have you on Board!
P.P.S.: I just remembered Jen's terrific welcome post for all newbies! DOH. Here it is: Welcome Newbies!
