let me preface this by saying: i mean NO OFFENSE AT ALL to anyone with a speech impediment. i have a brother who stuttered for years and a sister-in-law who is not only a speech pathologist but has a slight speech impediment herself.
i have the utmost respect for anyone with any kind of speech problem.
ok, here goes my pet peeve:
radio stations (in the Baltimore/Washington area at least) who hire sub-par voice-over announcers. these guys (and a few women) all have "slushy speech." it's not a lisp. i don't know that i have a word for it, but i'm sure there is one if you're a speech pathologist. it's probably more than just sloppy speech (which i also can't stand!). it's this horrible sound when pronouncing Ss, Zs, some CHs and some Js. i don't know if you know what i'm talking about and/or how prevalent it is, but boy does it drive me up a wall. these people are supposed to be professionals! they are paid to make these commercials and whatnot nice to listen to. they should be able to speak clearly, with nice crisp Ss, the way the language was created! oh my, i really hate listening to those voice overs....
then again, there are people who over-enunciate, on the radio or otherwise. oy, does that make my skin crawl, too!
