Nugget, I feel so bad because I have said stuff like that to people. I start out meaning to say something nice but then I want to be funny too, so I throw something really off-the-wall in before I even think about what I'm saying. I know I've offended lots of people. I try to carefully evaluate everything I say before I say it but then people think I'm developmentally disabled because conversation with me becomes so stilted. I even once asked a woman I really liked if she was pregnant. She wasn't. I KNEW BETTER! She later went on to become my boss and we seemed to get along great. She was a champion and never held it against me. I was so afraid of saying anything to her that it took me months to get up the nerve to apologize.
Anyway, please don't hate people like me. In my case I only say stupid stuff because I like you and want you to know that I noticed your new outfit and think it's cute. It's not because I'm a scheming psychopath intent on ruining your day.
If it's any consolation, I will beat myself up for hours afterward, "Oh - why did I say that, why did I say that, why did I say that?" all the while hoping you took it in the spirit I meant it, not in the way it sounded.
When you see me coming, put on your armadillo cloak and try to let my idiotic words bounce off you.
On the other hand, maybe your colleague is just a b***h, in which case forget what I've just said. You can always tell their true colors by what they say about other people behind their backs.
