Hi Julie,
There are a number of schools of thought on how much is to much soy. Some say no more than 30 mg of soy isoflavones per day, others say a lot more is safe. I really don't know and think it is individual based on age, health, family health history, etc.
A goiter is an enlarged thryoid gland (front of the neck). Do a google search with just the word goiter in an you'll find a ton of stuff and pictures. It is usually caused by lack of iodine in the diet but because lack of iodine in a normal diet is rare these days they have looked at other foods that can cause goiters, like soy.
I think if I were you, I'd get a blood thyroid panel test. I may explain the weight gain (and fatique) if you are the least bit hypothyroid. The likelyhood of becoming hypothyroid increases with age, with it affecting 1 in 4 women....about the same as for IBS. Hypothyroidism has a huge affect on depression/emotions as well. Before diagnosed I thought for sure it was the perimenopause that caused the severe depression. Not so........it was the thyroid.
Maybe you could sub some of your soy protein by getting it from other sources......fish, fowl, ground nuts, beans, legumes, egg whites, etc.
I'm a firm believer, like a lot of experts that a natural progertone cream (I used to use Progest) can eleviate many symptoms associated with a fluctuation in estrogen levels....PMS, crying, depression.........etc. I think it is sorely overlooked as an easy way to avoid the monthly crazies.
Good luck...........
