RE: Refinishing Furniture       04/05/04 11:54 AM Edit Reply Quote Dimples Reged: 04/01/04 Posts: 346 Hi Bev, My husband told me to ask you if you let the stain dry for 24 hours before you varnished the furniture. He wants to know if you strip the furniture first. Then wipe it down with laquer thinner, then wash it down with Simple Green and steel wool. Wipe it down, then let it dry for 24 hours. When you stain it let it dry for 24 hours before applying (ORANGE SHELLAC) thinning the shellac down with denatured alcohol. Also used this alcohol to clean your brushes. Next step sand it down a little and wipe it off then you can varnish it. He said to give it 4 light coats of varnish letting each dry first before putting another. If you want to give it a coat or two of polyurethane give it light coats then sand. The last coat you don't sand. You can skip the polyurethane if you only want to. It takes longer to dry. He said if you only want to use the varnish that's fine too. He wanted to know what type of piece of furniture you were working on. Hope this helps! Pat Print     Remind Me     Notify Moderator
