Yes, and the sad thing is that we do all of the homework and have to direct them in how to treat us. We pay for their services, but we are the ones who seemingly know enough to know what we need.
Few doctors really understand IBS. It is a very complex mind-body connection that affects a lot of bodily functions. I was seeing a cardiologist for awhile for high blood pressure. It took four rounds of trying different BP prescription meds to control my BP at that time.
Once I started Heather's soluable fiber and started eating differently, guess what? If I took one of those BP tablets my BP dropped to 90/50 (way too low!). So... I stopped taking that med and my BP today is 110-120/70-80.
I find this entire mind body connection to be about diet and exercise, and understanding the differences between soluable and insoluable fiber. When we can, eat organic foods. If we can't afford this, then wash your veggies well and prepare according to the recipes on the Recipe Board and/or those found in Heather's books.
While IBS is not a pleasant thing, there is a mind-body connection that controls everything. It can make us miserable or WE can take control and make us comfortable and healthy overall. 
Do remember that stress is a big factor with IBS. We can't avoid all stressors in life, though there are some that we need not invite.
