We have a blu ray player and a flat screen TV. I don't remember the total cost, but it was a few thousand for both of them together. I believe the blu ray player was in the $600 range. It was something my husband really wanted. Left to my own devices, I wouldn't have bothered with it.
The resolution is a lot more clear, but if you're not a real movie & technology buff, you're probably fine with a regular DVD set-up.
As far as surround sound, yes, it would be nice, but it's not necessary, and in my living room at least, it would be kind of a joke!
