First, yes you need a specific blu-ray player or a PlayStation 3 (PS3)
Second, yes, you will see improved quality, however, if you are not watching the movie on a quality blu-ray player and a quality television, you are best to stay with the standard DVD and save yourself the extra dollars. A quality surround sound system is also an added bonus, and expense, to appreciate the whole blu-ray experience. Then you can add on the calibration of your plasma or LCD display to get the whole experience. So, unless you've got dough for the whole shibang, use what you have. Are you a connaisseur or just a movie watcher? My DH and I are connaisseurs - we live to watch movies on our home theatre system.
Third, until you're supporting yourself fully, save your money for more important things. Blu-ray player $400+, 52" plasma television $4000+, decent surround sound $5000+, calibration $450+, then your movies. (At least for a baseline system - we're approaching $10,000 quickly and that's just our living room stuff!!)
Fourth, blu-rays are more expensive $20 to $40 per movie because of the technology in the disc, the additional content and the digital copy included with certain ones.
Dear, you sound like you have a lot more to worry about right now than movie media. Get your ibs stable, get your life in order, move out of the folks place, then start worrying about your entertainment choices.
