I have a decent doc, but he's in Olney, MD-- might be too far for your needs. Dr. Arthur Schoengold (301) 279-0380. He's a PCP and GI doc, and if you have Blue Cross, he's probably on your list.

Whatever doc you choose, have him do an upper and lower GI (barium x-ray) and a colonoscopy with biopsies. Those 2 tests will steer you in the right direction, if there is any irritable bowel disease, diverticulitis, etc.

If they come back clear and there's no IBD, you'll know you went for an aggressive approach to finding out what's wrong. At least the colonoscopy (which you can have asleep) will satisfy the need for a sigmoidoscopy (which is awake). A colonoscopy is the quicker recovery ,IMHO.
