I've had both, and like anyone else here who's had it will tell ya, if it's mono, you're down for the count. I worked through it for about 2 months before I literally collapsed and didn't get out of bed for 3 weeks other than to throw up or for D. I slept anywhere from 16-20 hours a day and had to get temporary state disability. At the time, I had been riding my bike to work and it was almost a year after that I could make the ride again w/o getting winded. But then, I still had mono when I went back to work. I couldn't afford to stay home anymore.
Strep sucks but at least you can still function to an extent, and like you said, it'll go away. I don't remember strep ever creating much trouble for IBS, but it's been awhile.
Good luck, I hope it's just strep. If it's mono, get to bed and sleep it off.
