I go to Vegas at least twice a year. I go primarily to party, veg by the pool, and gamble. There are lots of cheaper slots you can play so that your wallet doesn't hurt too much.
If it's your first time in Vegas, I think staying on the strip is pretty important so you can walk around. Ballys is usually a pretty good deal for a pretty nice room. Both Stardust and Circus Circus are older and farther down on the strip. If you're looking to contain cost, you might consider Ballys and Excalibur, just because they tend to be a little cheaper without sacrificing location. You can also get good deals at Las Vegas Hilton sometimes. It's off the strip, but it has a very convenient monorail location, and the rooms are pretty.
A website I like to use for hotel info is tripadvisor.com. I'd suggest checking it out if you haven't already.
If you do a search on this site, you should find lots of info, because the Fall Sprawl has been there the past couple of years.
