I have a self-defrosting freezer, and even with the cycling, we NEVER get anything out of it that's not frozen solid. Soooo... if you guys are getting un-frozen things out of it, you might want to call a repairman, because it sounds like the thing's broken or on the fritz somehow.

But yeah - like Amie said, a self-defrosting freezer is safe for meat, because it's dense and solid and once it's frozen, it takes a long time to defrost. Something like bread is more delicate, and it's gonna come out stale from a self defroster.
