I know, I'm supposed to be taking a break from the boards, but I checked in this morning, saw this and had to respond.
Yesterday, I was at the post office and there was this Hispanic gentleman standing in front of the stamp machine. He looked so confused. He pointed at the book of stamps in the machine, held out his hand with a few coins, and tried to get me to explain if he had enough. He needed $7.20 ---and he probably only had about three dollars worth of coins. I tried to explain to him how much he needed, but he didn't understand (he didn't speak English very well.)
All of a sudden I remembered that I had bought 2 books of stamps earlier in the week (for Christmas cards)---and in the meantime, my husband and I decided not to send out cards this year. So I reached in my purse, got one of the book of stamps, and handed it to him. I said, "If you can use these, I want you to have them." The look on his face was priceless. You would've thought I handed him a million dollars! He went from sheer anguish to utter joy!
He stood there, shocked that someone had handed him what he needed. As I walked away, he hollered at me. I turned, and he was holding out his hand---with the small number of coins. I shook my head and told him, "No, I don't want those. I want you to have the stamps. They are my gift to you. Merry Christmas!"
The room got quiet, and I realized everyone had stopped their hustling and bustling to watch this exchange.
As I walked away, I heard the man say in his broken English, "Me-wwy Cwist-mas!"
