It costs well over a thousand dollars. It's not called a "Hair Hat" officially; it's call a "system." Don't ask me why.
No, you do not sleep on it; you remove it at night. Yes, you wash it like normal hair, but very gently, more like a fine sweater in Woolite, squeezed, not wrung-out. You have to buy a canvas head form the same size as your own head to pin the Hair Hat on and to set the "Hair Hat" hair. Yes, you can use a blow-dryer if you don't want to drip-dry it, but use a low setting.
Most folks who wear a "piece" all the time usually purchase two, and the second "piece" is about half the price. The reason for buying two is to always have one available should the need arise.
What happens when my real hair grows? I get a haircut. What happens when my hair turns white? I get it colored. What happens when I want a different hair style? I'm screwed.
I don't know where you live, but there are Hair Hat People all over the country. Just ask your hairdresser; she'll know.
Beth, I understand how you feel about losing so much of your hair. I see old pix of myself, and I'm shocked at how much hair I had then. My hair loss has been a very slow process, but a steady one. I was lucky to find an honest professional who gave me his opinion on whether or not I was a good candidate for a "piece." Because my hair is so thin and so fine, and because there are some spots that are beginning to be "balding," a "piece" will work well for me. If you find a reputable person, they'll tell you.
We do what we have to do and we work with what we have. I was lucky; I have incredible complexion, so I never have to wear makeup. The trade-off is that I have awful hair and nails. So, I have artificial nails and now 'm getting a Hair Hat. I'm being a Big Girl and dealing with it, and moving on. You know something, Beth? When I complained to my hairdresser (who is also a good friend) about my crappy hair and nails, she replied, "Yes, but a damn good heart!" We work with what God has given us.
One thing I learned from my new survivor friend is don't sweat the small stuff -- and it's ALL small stuff. Every day we wake up is a gift.
