Christie, I often have a problem sleeping, and, like you, take a sleeping aid. However, I've noticed that my problem seems to go away when I avoid ALL caffeine (including chocolate) HOURS before I go to bed. I don't mean one hour or even two, but MANY HOURS. I cut out all caffeine by 3:00 in the afternoon.
Also, I've noticed that sugar will do the same; not only will I wake up in the middle of the night, wide awake, but my legs will shake. It's not RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome), it's SUGAR. Thus, I now cut out all sugar at 3:00 in the afternoon as well. If I want a bed-time snack, I just make sure it's not too high in carbs (which turns to sugar) and has no caffeine or sugar.
Hope this helps. Above all, you must do whatever it takes to keep awake while driving!
Bev
