Contrarian opinion       09/30/05 10:28 AM Edit Reply Quote Sand Reged: 12/13/04 Posts: 4490 Loc: West Orange, NJ (IBS-D) I agree that as long as your being a little late doesn't affect your work, it's silly for your boss to care about it. Apparently, however, she does. That may mean she's awfully short-sighted, but I don't think it means she's nuts or needs to get a life. The most likely reason she's tracking all the times you're late is so she can "show cause" if she decides to fire you because of it. Unfortunately, if that's the case, the fact that you get your work done, don't spend all your time on the phone or the Internet, and carry the heaviest load won't matter to her. She's one of the people in the world who think being on time is super-important (there are a depressingly large number of them) and being late outways everything else you do. (Editorial comment: I think this represents a terrible failure of management, where bosses focus on stuff they can measure - however meaningless - because they're clueless about how to judge actual results.) It's a bad fit to be an "always late" employee with a "clock watcher" boss, but I've been there and there's probably nothing you can do to convince her being late is unimportant in the scheme of things. I gather you're leaving soon, but until then my advice would be to tread pretty carefully around this issue. If your boss knows you're thinking about leaving, tread even more carefully. I'm sorry to ratchet up the stress level - just what your tummy needs, I know - but that's my take on the situation.
