Dr says not to worry about colonscopy - what do you think?

My husband has had IBS we think for around 10 years - I say we think because he hasn't been formally diagnosed. Today he went to the doctor and told her he thought he might have IBS and ran through symptons. She said that unless there was a family history of bowel cancer she wouldn't suggest he have a colonscopy. That surprised me and that was where the discussion ended. Just wondering what other doctors recommended when you bring up IBS? Surely they should at least consider sending him to a dietician.

Thanks,

Sandra.
