Re: Serotonin Info -question for ShawnEric

I am new to this group. I have a question regarding the serotonin issue.
I have been dealing with IBS which, in me, exhibits itself as diarreah (excuse my selling). The IBS diagnosis came after the various upper and lower GI tests which ruled out everything else. That was probably 10 years ago. The actual IBS symptoms started around 1986, when I was 23.
Anyway, a friend who is a doctor and I have had casual discussions lately about suspected connections between IBS and serotonin in the gut. My questioin is: is there any connection between serotonin imbalance seen in IBSer's (causing gut issues) and despresion? I ask this because I am currently going through what I go through on average once per year: a period of what I describe as physical and emotional depression (operating on 50% energy, depressive thoughts) coupled with an increase in diarreah. I am wondering if IBSer's sometimes go through periods where serotonin levels are so out of whack that not only do the gut issues act up, but what can only be described as depression flares up as well.
I am NOT someone who has been diagnosed as having depression, nor do I feel that I am clinically depressed. I HAVE been in therapy for life situational things. I only mention that as a way of saying that I think my baseline is not having the "condition" of depression. These episodes seem to flare up, and then dissipate after 1 - 3 weeks.
Anyway, any thoughts? Has this ever happened to you? Please let me know. Thanks.
