Long distance runners?

I ran one half marathon and basically fueled on the wrong foods. I'm about to start training for another one. What do you use for fuel on the long runs? Do you find it easier to eat the healthy foods when mixed as smoothies? Talking about the problematic foods like fruits/veggies, etc...
