If you are a person who is brought up in any rural area in Kerala, you will surely have visited an Ayurvedic pharmacy/clinic at least once to consult an Ayurvedic doctor. The memory of the smell of herbs and the image of properly arranged bottles which contain dark-coloured concoctions on the cupboard might be still lingering in your mind.

Ayurveda is so part of the Kerala life that you cannot imagine a village here without an old Ayurveda practitioner in it. Times have changed a lot and instead of the small clinics of traditional Ayurveda practitioners, you can see huge buildings of Ayurveda hospitals, Ayurveda resorts or spas with all the modern facilities, luring the tourists and the locals alike.

Thus Ayurveda has been commercialised to a great extent during the last few years, but it has not affected the quality of the treatment. Though some Ayurvedic resorts and spas are accessible to only the affluent communities and tourists, there are still some resorts catering to the demands of the middle class too. In that respect, Ayurveda has not been alienated from any class/ group of people. Ayurveda kerala houses many herbal gardens, factories creating herbal medicines etc.It was also home for renowned physicians who were well-versed in Ayurvedic treatment. This traditional medical system is still followed by many even in this era of allopathic healthcare system.
