Ab exercises

I'm an avid exerciser and I find that aerobic exercise has no adverse effect on my IBS symptoms. However, that is not the case for abdominal exercise (toning exercises that target the core, such as sit-ups, crunches and pilates exercises). I would love to strengthen my core, but I don't know how to do it without triggering a massive IBS flare up. Should I just avoid ab work altogether as it always triggers a painful flare up? Does anyone have any suggestions? Strategies you have found useful? Thanks!
