Hi there!
A lot of people really enjoy pilates, so I think it is definitely a good idea to try and see how you get on with it. I will say that althought pilates is good for strengthening your core, and toning up some of the parts of your body a lot of people recommend that if you are trying to lose some body fat you have to incorporate cardio into your workout, so any walking, running, biking, etc that you can add will really help.
As for DVDs, some girls I know have the Windsor Pilates series (It is a set of DVDs... I think the kit you get comes with a mat, or some other stuff, not sure though.) and they think they are pretty good. An exercise DVD series that I really like is the "for dummies" series. I have 2 (not pilates) that are REALLY good. They explain a lot, and take you through things so it is a really good way to learn. I know they have pilates for dummies, so I'd check that one out too.
Other people might have some other ideas about pilates DVDs so hopefully you can check out a few different ones.
Another good idea if it's possible is to try and attend a floor pilates class at a local gym or community centre or something. Then you can make sure you are getting proper instruction before you take on doing too much by yourself at home. This way, you can make sure you are doing it in a way to get the best results and without causing yourself any injuries.
Good luck, let us know how it goes! We always like to hear what people like/don't like!
Cheers! --Steph
