Cyndy:
I saw a specialist, last week, and have been diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder: aloepecia areata. I am in remission. My immune system is no longer attacking my hair follicles and therefore regrowth is occurring.
I have a type of anemia which causes this effect related to B12/folate absorption, pernicious anemia which the expert believes 'stresses out' my immune system and causes my aloepecia. I get B12 shots and eat LOTS of folate and recently started eating meat/fish/egg whites/fowl...My body wanted animal protein and I listened. My hair grows stronger, thicker, faster with a high protein diet without sugars, etc., and lots of greens/veg.
Re: do I feel ill not following Heather's diet to the letter?
NO. I take a SF supplement and I eat tons of SF veggies and when in the mood, SF fruits. I follow a lot of Heather's wisdom, avoiding triggers most of the time, especially fat, dairy. This keeps me stable. I also take high potency enzymes which REALLY help keep me stable.
I absolutely take SF prior to consuming anything!!! I cannot tell you enough how much SFS has helped with my D!
I may not eat the grain based SF that you do--however I eat tons of other sources of SF. If you check the sources of SF, you will note that there are TONS of SF fruits and veggies. Perhaps you should reacquaint yourself with them.
I'm elated though...watching hair grow in so quickly...it's like witnessing 'your child,' an infant girl grow hair so quickly. It's not grey either!!! (a nice coppery-tinted brown) (I'm 31)
No, in general though, my diet usually isn't all that radically different from Heather's.
Maybe see an endocrinologist? A dermatologist? I waited over a year and a half for my testing/appointments--seriously.
Kate, IBS-D.
