I actually want to exercise!

Hi everyone,

I figure if I post here, it's like making an agreement with myself. :-)

I really want to exercise and get back into shape. I know I'll feel better and reduce my anxiety too. I used to be in great shape and was exercising a lot. Due to the IBS and other health issues, I've gained all of my weight back and am totally inactive. The more recent problem is that I have plantar fasciitis so any exercise involving impact is out.

I want to start with stretching and some cardio work and then move up to strength training. I'm too out of shape to try it all at once and don't want to get discouraged. I have some yoga/pilates DVDs that I love (mostly on the ball to spare my feet) and will incorporate those.

So my new plan is to check out a local gym and see if I can try one of the elliptical machines. They aren't supposed to have impact, so I'm hoping I can do those. The gym I'm checking into has a free week trial and can even do a monthly membership at a higher rate. It's not ideal, but it's probably more realistic until I can see if I can do it. The gym is right on the way home from work, so I should be able to stop by (my old gym was very out of the way, and I always forgot about it).

Does that sound like a decent start?
