You're so sweet. I'm sorry for the loss of your grandfather... and I think you're right, no matter how the relationship went, those feelings of regret and loss are going to be there regardless, it's human nature.
I don't think eating dessert first is silly at all. It's important to savor the good things in life, even (and especially!) the small things. It's easy to lose track of that sometimes.
