Hi there! Nightime also tends to be my "worst time". Studies have shown that most "problems" are worse at night, regardless of whether they are physical, mental or emotional because the coming of night (dark time) has more negative connotations than the coming of morning (light time, new day, new beginnings). As well, people with IBS are more anxious than most and have fewer coping skills and therefore what is not so good or bad will be magnified with the coming of night. Many IBS sufferers are also restless and have problems sleeping. They get anxious at bedtime for fear of not being able to sleep (sometimes only subconsciously, but it has an effect nonethless). I find that my antispasmodic, which I take at night, makes me sleepy and calmer. When I feel this way, my body tells my mind that I am going to be able to sleep and I then feel less restless and anxious, which leads to less or no pain.
