Way to go on being coffee free! I was a committed coffee drinker from age 12, and was up to SIX cups a day during my senior year of college. When coffee started bothering my tummy I switched to about 4 cans of diet coke a day. My tummy still hurt so I exclusively ate popcorn and basically no other food. When that didn't work I went right back to drinking coffee. When I finally quit for real, I quit all caffeine cold turkey. Man was that hard! I literally lay in my bed in a dark room for about a week. I felt like I had a brain tumor. But now, I've made it through my first year of law school without being a regular coffee drinker. When I am particularly stable, I go for one small soy latte from starbucks, and I seem to be fine. But, I love the feeling of waking up and NOT needing a cup. I used to wake up feeling sluggish and puffy until about my 2nd cup. Now I wake up and can put my rings on right away (because I'm not addicted to the diuretic effect of the coffee), I can face bright lights and honking cabs, adn I don't drop dead at 3pm. I miss coffee terribly, the taste, that first buzz, the look of it in my hands, but I fake myself out with tea, and I give in to the occasional craving. I'm just really glad that I'm not hooked the way I used to be. I wish you lots of luck, and plenty of silence this week. Be patient with yourself -- it's a tough habit to kick! I give you credit for being able to face the glare of a computer screen. AP
