I really think that the solution depends on the individual. With slow colon, which is my problem, the only solution is osmotic laxatives, such as Milk of Magnesia or Miralax (a prescription remedy, much more comfortable). I also use mineral oil daily, but I don't know about long term consequences. My doctor basically said "whatever it takes."
I'm trying Heather's diet, with a gradual increase in soluble fiber as suggested, using Benefiber. I'm going to add the acacia now that it has arrived. (I ordered the "Big Kahuna" and it arrived very quickly!) I'm hoping that the soluble fiber with help give the miralax something to work with, so to speak, and help with motility, cramps and stability. We'll see.
I'm becoming persuaded that hormones are playing a major role here. Back in the old days, before this was a chronic problem, I used to be constipated during the days before my menstrual period. Relief came naturally when I "fell off the roof" as my mother used to say, and had my period.
Anyone else notice a pattern with menstrual cycles, birth control pills, hrt, perimenopause, menopause?
